"onCOOPtics" - High Intensity Laser for Oncology
The overall goal of ZIK "Oncooptics - High Intensity Laser for Oncology" is to implement novel and efficient laser based technology to create well-defined particle beams and their application in cancer treatment. Fundamental research in the fields of high intensity optics and laser physics is needed as well as the networking with biological and medical radio-oncology.
Main activities are devoted to optimize laser based ion beam sources of highest quality by development of suitable target structures and adapted laser pulse shaping to create medical-relevant particle beams. A further important aspect is the design and fabrication of high damage threshold and degradation-free components for high power and high intensity lasers. To make these particle beam sources applicable for medical cancer treatment, concepts for particle beam steering and shaping are going to be developed. In addition, investigations on compact and high repetition rate ultra-short pulse amplification strategies are pursued to reduce cost and complexity of future radio-oncology systems, making them available for a much broader spectrum of curative or adjuvant cancer treatment.
